As the final piece of a 15-year masterplan, Brighton College set out to upgrade their PAC facilities. A new building with a 400-seat theatre is combined with studios for dance, drama and music, together with English and Computing Science classrooms. This allows pupils to explore everything in the performing arts, both on and off stage: from classical acting and dancing to theatre rigging and computerized music production.
The ambitious brief is condensed in a compact volume, set apart from the historical Gilbert Scott designed Main Building. This reopens the campus, with intimate outdoor spaces between old and new buildings echoing the historical campus atmosphere.
The stack of required spaces is dressed in a light, sculptural brickwork veil, with the theatre floating over a pupil café and sixth form center at street level, the social heart of the campus. On the south and west, the volume curves out from the footprint. On the north and east, it curves down to relate to the lower scale context and reveals the view towards the Gilbert Scott building. This dynamic play of curves creates a choreographed shape, referring to gestures of dance.
The theatre space is lifted up from the campus grounds, which creates an open social space at campus level. Here, theatrical staircases arrive and descend - wrapping around a three dimensional, naturally lit central void. This lively place is where one can see and be seen, turning the circulation space also into a place for performance.
Throughout the building, all studios and classrooms were given large picture frame windows, making the activity visible from the main public areas in and around the building, but also giving daylight to all studios, including the theatre hall. The space can be lit during the day by opening a horizontal blind, a timber-lined oculus to the sky.
This curvy, intimate 400-seat theatre space is a stage for all departments, but will also be used as the main assembly hall for students and parents. It allows for different setups to offer maximum teaching and performance possibilities. In fact, all backstage spaces are designed to challenge pupils to the craft of theatre, with wide technical galleries, easy light rigging and an open control booth.

krft is driven by incorporating societal urgencies in our practice, yet trying to counter them in timeless and robust ways. Their designs are embedded in a historical context, are connected to existing urgencies and try to explore future potential. Preferably all at once.
Their designs are the result of an utmost sensibility for client, citizens and context, celebrating the beauty of things made, driven by the search of magic in material constellations.
