At Maasvlakte 2, an artificial extension at the western edge of the Port of Rotterdam, MVRDV has designed a striking new landmark—Portlantis. This visitor center, which combines educational exhibitions with public viewing spaces, invites the public to explore and understand the vast and complex landscape of one of the world's largest ports from a fresh perspective.

The architecture is composed of five offset, rotating exhibition floors stacked vertically, creating a highly dynamic form. A striking red outdoor staircase winds its way up from the surrounding dunes to the rooftop, forming a free-access viewing path that transforms the building into more than just a display venue—it becomes a "watchtower" in dialogue with the city. Each floor is a square plan featuring a large panoramic window, with views carefully aligned to the function of each level: the café faces the dunes, offering an immersive landscape experience, while the restaurant overlooks the North Sea sunset and the illuminated port at night.

The atrium design is equally striking and full of tension. Soaring to a height of 22 meters, the space features a suspended kinetic sculpture above and a detailed model of the Port of Rotterdam at its base to welcome visitors. A mirrored ceiling visually doubles the height of the space, enhancing its vertical drama. The entrance, marked by a revolving door, is carefully choreographed to guide the flow of movement—only upon reaching the central atrium does the exhibition fully unfold.

Curated by Kossmanndejong, the exhibition spans the central three floors, each dedicated to a distinct theme exploring the port's transformation into a low-carbon, intelligent, and sustainable system. Every panoramic window is thoughtfully oriented toward a specific aspect of port activity, creating an immediate and immersive dialogue between the exhibition content and the real-world operations outside.

As a bridge between Rotterdam and its port, Portlantis fully embraces sustainable principles. Its structure is designed for disassembly, the façade panels are recyclable, and the foundation avoids the use of concrete piles—all measures aimed at reducing the building's environmental footprint. More importantly, the building harnesses wind power and high-efficiency thermal systems to generate over 30% more energy than it consumes annually, marking a significant step toward becoming a green energy building.

"Portlantis is a beacon, it's eye-catching, but it’s also a kind of watchtower", says MVRDV founding partner Winy Maas. "When you live in Rotterdam, the port sits on the horizon – it's'over there'and many people don't really know what goes on there. Portlantis gives people a way to investigate, to see how things are changing in the port, how that relates to the city, and how it affects the life they live in the city. It does this extremely efficiently – like a machine for storytelling."
