Re-folded House, Vancouver, Canada

McLeod Bovell

Midway through construction, the client took over the project from her parents and engaged McLeod Bovell to re-conceptualize the house with a fresh perspective. She challenged the designers to reconsider conventional residential programming and spatial relationships. This led to a design intervention that clarified the geometry and materiality of the house's exterior and reflected these ideas within the interiors.

Folded walls, hovering floors, and angled ceilings create flexible thresholds and dynamic prosceniums that guide movement through the house in a cinematic way. Views, light, and spaces unfold gradually, and traditional markers like doors and hallways are minimized to blur programmatic boundaries. Sparse, sculptural furniture supports multiple modes of use, reinforcing the fluidity of the space.

Material choices were guided by the site's natural context. The house sits on a floodplain within the Fraser River delta, an area prone to seasonal flooding. In response, Accoya wood — a durable, acetylated pine developed in the Netherlands for wet environments — was used throughout. Its distinctive industrial markings remain visible, evoking both its treatment process and its resilience. Left untreated, the wood weathers into a soft grey, echoing the site's retained hemlock trees.

To further adapt to the site's hydrological conditions, the lowest level omits drywall and insulation to prevent water damage, while mechanical systems are housed in a waterproof bunker. The landscape design treats the surrounding wetlands as integral to the project, expressed through three folded layers. The first, representing river sediment, is articulated through functional surfaces like the driveway and stairs. The second layer, composed of wetland vegetation and native plantings, forms a soft transition between low-lying areas and elevated ground. The third consists of constructed elements — walkways, benches, and boardwalks — that appear to float above the landscape. Overall, the project is a meditation on the relationship between architecture and its natural setting. Every element — from folded forms to material choices — expresses an understanding of place and a reinterpretation of what a family house can be in such a context.
