Located northwest of Seattle near a small beach town, The Rambler sits on family land, a secluded wooded site, grounding itself through materiality and form. The project was realized through close collaboration with local friends and makers, leveraging years of shared experience to achieve a high level of craft. The program is straightforward: a 3-bedroom, 2-bath home with dedicated spaces for music and drawing for a musician and an architect. At 1,700 sq ft, the house is modest in size but extends into the landscape with a sheltering roof and screen walls that create outdoor spaces on all sides. Abundant light and sky views penetrate the dense woodland. The roof adds outdoor space and an elevated herb garden, while the north section allows for a future second story. Thoughtful site zoning accommodates vegetables, a potential shop/guest house, firepit gatherings, and stargazing from the terrace.

The design concept emerges from a solid rectangular volume typical of a one-story ''rambler.'' Portions were carved out to create gathering spaces, open axial views, and natural ventilation while maintaining privacy. Emphasizing the ground-to-roof relationship, the house stretches horizontally, connecting to the earth and framing the sky. A raised concrete base anchors the house visually and physically, serving as structure, radiant heating, and polished floor finish. The roof extends as a large overhang for shading, terrace space, solar panels, and an herb garden. Selected voids connect to trees and sky, providing roof access and skylights that illuminate interiors. A site-cast fireplace and chimney mark the heart of the living space for family gatherings and music.

The concrete base and full-height masonry walls establish a language of mass and permanence. Textured masonry with deep joints contrasts smooth concrete and lime-painted surfaces. Durable, low-maintenance materials that age gracefully were prioritized. On-site Douglas fir, removed for construction, was milled for the roof, open kitchen shelves, and coffee table. Cedar from the site forms the entry door, benches, and east privacy fence. Interior and exterior spaces were integrated from the start: brick screen walls extend into the landscape, forming semi-enclosed outdoor rooms that filter light and views, blending the structure into its surroundings. Landscape greenery reaches up to perimeter walls and, in areas like the entry garden, into the home's center.
