Shizuoka Ken is A place known for hot springs. It takes 3hour to south of Tokyo. The site is on top of a mountain ridge with dozens of 20meter high zelkova trees. Driving 15min can reach the sea. The newly builted building for two ladies in their 60's. Two have worked together as a social worker for decades in Tokyo and have decided to move to the rural district of Shizuoka. They need a large dining room and kitchen space to welcome guests, and a guestroom with wheelchair accessible bath. The house consists of 5 huts. Each hut has its own proportion matching each program. The bedroom is just big enough to have 2 beds with low ceiling creating a cocoon like space. The ceiling of the dining room is at 8m creating a sublime space. It is a space where they greet new people from the local community and welcome their old friends from the city. The guest room is equipped with a wheelchair accessible bath where they can accompany their parents and also their disabled guests. Concrete interior walls adding a grand feel to the interior. Wood cladded exterior walls and roof. Aging affect as time goes by blending into the surroundings. The house sits on top of the mountain ridge where the top had been leveled by the previous owner. The roofline of the huts is to recall the previous ridgeline. SUMA have created a skylight at the tip of the roof and let light bounce on the ceiling. At the bottom of the ceiling, installed spotlights shooting up towards the ceiling as an indirect light. The ceiling is painted white to bounce both natural and artificial light. JIKK is Cozy and homey, but sublime. To create intimacy among people living, and also among hosts and guests. To create interaction with the building and the environment(nature). The shape of the building is organic but unnatural. SUMA thinks that the space should provide intimacy and grandness. From something you know that you are comfortable with, to something you do not know, yet to know. It should be cute but cool.
