I was brought to see a site in the north of Awaji Island, a steeply sloped embankment where the forest had been cleared, and Mr. Yasuyuki Nanbu, the representative of the Pasona Group, asked me to design the "Meditation Dojo In The Air". I thought I could create a space where one can place themselves in a unique place.
The first floor contains simple lodgings of private rooms and a canteen, in a linear timber framed tube, supported minimally on only two steel grid-framed pillars, because of the cliff edge condition of the site. The one floor high timber Vierendeel truss spans 21 m, and the end of the truss was cantilevered 12 m in order to reduce the stress of the long span. In order to maximize the transparency and spatial openness of the second floor outdoor deck space for meditation, the entire roof is supported by 12 cm diameter steel columns spaced 3 m apart and cantilevered from the floor below making it possible to avoid any diagonal bracing within the space. Glulam beams of 105 x 300 mm at 500 mm pitch running orthogonally to the girder direction were arranged throughout the entire roof to act as rafters. Normally, joists are set on top of larger beams running orthogonally, but inserting a large beam here would disrupt the spatial continuity of interior and exterior. Therefore, as we have implemented many times before, the small beams are used as the struts to form an open truss, together with top and bottom chords of minimal steel I-sections laid on their side, and diagonally inserted steel flat bars. The trusses each spanning 3 m, avoided the need for large beams, made it possible to visually erase the structure. The girders had been eliminated to enhance the continuity inside and outside, but furthermore, the surrounding decking was stepped down so that even when sitting on the floor, the handrails along the perimeter would not enter into the line of sight of the landscape.
When approaching the building from the road, a powerful wooden frame of nearly 100m confronts the surrounding forest with a strong contrast, but the ceiling height gradually decreases as you climb the large stairs. When sitting on the deck the building's presence disappears leaving visitors with the greenery and wind of the forest, the singing of birds and frogs during the daytime, and the crying of insects at night, making you realize that you are being dominated by your senses of sight, sound, and smell.
