Lake Como Design Festival

Lake Como, Italy's third-largest lake, is also one of Europe’s deepest. The towns surrounding it have been popular destinations since Roman times, later developing a distinctive identity around the silk trade after the Renaissance. Just an hour's drive from Milan, the lakeside towns continue to attract visitors with their tranquil landscapes, historic architecture and cultural heritage.

Since 2018, the region has hosted the Lake Como Design Festival, an annual event centred on history, design, architecture and art. Through exhibitions, talks and events, the festival creates a dialogue between architectural heritage and contemporary creative practices. Since its inception, it has brought together around 650 designers and galleries from around the world and welcomed more than 100,000 design professionals and cultural enthusiasts. Though still relatively young, the festival has already established itself as a promising fixture on the international design calendar. The festival takes place across a remarkable collection of historic venues, including Teatro Sociale, Palazzo del Broletto, Palazzo Mantero, Palazzo Valli Bruni, Palazzo Mugiasca, Museo Casartelli, Villa Gallia, Villa Olmo, Villa Salazar and Villa del Grumello.

In 2023, "Naturalis Historia" explored botany, mineralogy and zoology through a main exhibition at Villa Olmo, alongside satellite events in other historic buildings. The themes "Lightness" and "Fragments"followed in 2024 and 2025, with exhibitions at Villa del Grumello, the Chilometro della Conoscenza and San Pietro in Atrio, gradually extending the festival’s presence across the city.

From 12 to 20 September this year, the Lake Como Design Festival will take "Confine" (Border) as its curatorial theme, examining boundaries across territories, nations, ideas, psychology, consciousness and the relationship between the self and others. Through the exploration of the "other", the festival also invites visitors to reconsider the boundaries of the individual. One example is "Disegno Nomade", a collaboration between Lupo Borgonovo, Lithos Edizioni and Jaipur Rugs. Inspired by fasteners used by nomadic peoples across Eurasia, the work incorporates traces of ancient urban ruins, animal forms and barely discernible human faces within a monumental drawing. These fragmented images reflect the artist’s understanding of human history as a constantly shifting narrative, in which memory, culture and identity are continually transformed.

Beyond Villa del Grumello, the festival will extend into Villa del Grumello Park and Villa Saporiti, with talks and site-specific installations also taking place throughout the area. As visitors wander through the town, they encounter an ongoing dialogue between historic architecture and contemporary imagination, turning Como itself into a setting where heritage, design and new ways of thinking converge.
