The buildings main focus is the wonderful view to the fields, as such, to maximise the enjoyment of this aspect Pieter-Jan and Jovanca created an elevation almost completely made of glass. All living areas benefit from the same exceptional quality of view. The house is elongated which serves to increase the perceived mass of the dwelling but the built footprint is decidedly modest. The first floor volume was added to provide accommodation for two children's bedrooms, this is a unique space within the home, and thanks to its elevated status, affords views even further out into the countryside. At the other side of the house there is a second entrance through the back door that gives direct access to the side kitchen. The main kitchen is located directly behind it, consciously positioned on the hinge point of the L-shape. As a result, connections are established between this and the other spaces such as the living room and beyond into the courtyard. However, it avoids creating a completely open kitchen. The external patio space not only separates the internal rooms, it also allows morning sun to flood into the house. Through its organic shape the courtyard enters into a dialogue with the sleek architecture of the house. Between the kitchen and the living room is the dining area with a large dining table that provides a focus and a place where various atmospheres are created depending on the use and the occasion. At the very end, behind the living room, Pieter-Jan and Jovanca opted for a flexible space. It serves as a playroom / summer living room which hints at the traditional verandas of the past. Though open and connected, the house can also offer the possibility to isolate yourself when desired. For example, the office space is 'around a corner', secluded from where one enters the house yet it is still a part of the overarching concept of connectivity. Through a combination of carefully selected materials and precise detail design the composition is calm and rational. This restrain is reflected in the use of three key materials: concrete, wood and glass. These materials are utilised to form large surfaces which purposefully evoke calmness through their scale and form. Their selection and design was not arrived at quickly, Pieter-Jan and Jovanca painstakingly researched and eventually sourced the ideal components for the desired effect of seclusion, peace and quiet.
