Studio Libeskind

The Royal Free Hospital is part of the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust (RFL) - one of the largest providers of cancer treatment in the UK and receives the most referrals for suspected cancer in London. To enable the best use of the center’s site within the hospital grounds, the ground-level footprint is small while the building expands as it rises. Outside is landscaped with both soft and hardscape areas and offers quiet seating as well as connecting to existing walkways on the hospital campus. The building is nestled into a planted garden designed by Martha Schwarz Partners. A roof garden also creates a serene enclosure for visitors.

The Centre contrasts with its hospital surroundings, drawing visitors in with an approachable and welcoming timber form. The exterior's curves evoke a calm and peaceful interior space that offers visitors a warm, private, and light-filled environment. Clad in ribbons of weathered timber panels that swell outward as the building rises. Double and triple-height glazing cut across the form ushering in light to the interiors. A Ripple Wall that runs along the perimeter of the site is inspired by serpentine walls. The arched curve is a structural yet beautiful form that creates a series of pockets that wrap the garden as the wall wriggles across the landscape. As the wall undulates across the site, small alcoves are created offering spots for people to sit alone or in small groups. Over time, the lush and colorful planting will spill over the walls softening the paths and private spaces.

The design uses trees from the existing woodland to provide an intimate and soothing outdoor space where you are at once embraced and screened by planting. The garden draws inspiration from nearby Hampstead Heath to create a landscape that feels like a natural extension of the heath, wrapping and embracing the building with nature to create a safe and intimate place. The landscape has been designed to enhance biodiversity, with a green roof and a layered planting scheme that introduces flowering trees, wildflower meadow perennials, and grasses to attract birds, pollinators, and invertebrates.

Studio Libeskind
Studio Libeskind is involved in designing and realizing a diverse array of urban, cultural and commercial projects around the globe. Our Studio is a collaboration of architects and designers that believe architecture is a practice of optimism. We approach our projects with the attitude that to make great places, you must believe in the future, but also remember the past.

Studio Libeskind’s architecture emerges from the idea that a building should be expressive and reflect contemporary life. Innovation is at the core of our design process. We believe that bold design must be realized with sustainable technology and we strongly believe that the art of architecture lies in creating a maximum impact within the constraints of budgets and functionality. We know from experience that great architecture comes from working with great clients; however, architecture is a public art and we hold ourselves accountable not only to the client, but to the communities, and cities in which we build.

Daniel and his partner Nina Libeskind established Studio Daniel Libeskind in Berlin, Germany, in 1989 after winning the competition to build the Jewish Museum Berlin. In February 2003, Studio Daniel Libeskind moved its headquarters from Berlin to New York City when Daniel Libeskind was selected as the master planner for the World Trade Center redevelopment.
