This project stems from a decades-long collaboration between the architect and client. Over 25 years ago, the famed film director commissioned an award-winning office space, and now, after decades of Hollywood success, the director and their artistic spouse have decided to pursue a lifelong dream of returning to a tranquil lifestyle reminiscent of their upbringing around Montreal, Canada.

Situated on a wooded 65-acre site in the Appalachian foothills near the Eno River around Raleigh-Durham, NC, the Steeplechase House is designed as a pavilion among the trees, offering a space for reflection and repose. It seeks to connect its occupants to the surrounding natural environment while fostering a deeper understanding of the relationship between the natural and built worlds.

The house’s double-gabled roofs rise gracefully to 31 feet, with expansive glass façades that bring nature into the interior. The exterior, clad in reflective glass and black metal, shifts with the seasons: disappearing into the forest’s dappled light in summer and standing as a beacon in the occasional winter snow. The natural plywood interiors create a warm, inviting gathering space while maintaining an uninterrupted view into the surrounding forest.

The plan is organized into two open-gabled volumes, separating the public and private zones of the house. A kitchen and dining area serve as the connective tissue between these spaces, linked by a low, transparent gallery-like loggia with glass on both sides. Walking through this space feels akin to strolling in the forest, offering both division and connection between the house’s distinct zones while fostering a sense of openness and retreat. The Steeplechase House is a poetic exploration of its residents’ yearning for reconnection with nature. Nestled quietly in the Appalachian foothills, it serves as both a tranquil retreat and a thoughtful meditation on the timeless dialogue between the natural world and human design.
