Located in Shaoxing, China, NO SUCH THING is a newly launched concept store that blends fashion, accessories, home goods, and artistic objects. Its enigmatic name hints at a challenge to convention: the things we think we know—objects, typologies, spaces, and categories—might not be as fixed or self-evident as they seem. Inspired by this open-ended idea, design studio Mountain Soil approached the project by translating uncertainty and transience into spatial language—crafting a setting that is abstract yet richly sensory, like a "fashion forest" waiting to be explored.

The site originally featured a nearly seven-meter-high ceiling and expansive glass façades. Treating the space as an open terrain, Mountain Soil inserted two elongated volumes along its axis to divide functions, while responding to existing height differences and building lines to create dynamic vertical relationships. This irregular yet harmonious spatial arrangement defies the logic of rigid circulation commonly seen in retail, allowing visitors to wander freely, choose their own path, and experience the space like a forest that can be roamed intuitively.

The space's core is defined by two primary volumes—one for display, one for workspace. Preserving the glass façade and double-height openness ensures ample natural light and a continued sense of spatial fluidity. Structurally, existing steel columns are wrapped in wood and staggered throughout the space—evoking the presence of tree trunks. This transforms the space from a neutral container into an organic environment that breathes and unfolds. "We no longer see space as a fixed box or grid," says Mountain Soil.  "Instead, we aim to imbue it with ambiguity, allowing movement and bodily experience to define its form." This ambiguity also manifests in the materials. Located in Keqiao, one of China's largest textile hubs, the area’s fabric markets became a direct source of inspiration for the design. Instead of using rigid partitions or hard materials like wood or stone, the designers incorporated fiber and textiles to divide and define spaces—translating local production strengths into a soft architectural language that feels both light and resilient.

Every corner and transition in the space is guided by an awareness of bodily perception. For instance, the tall first-floor atrium becomes a civic zone for pausing—with casual dining and coffee seating that offers a gentle entry point from the street into the “forest.” There’s no single main staircase; instead, multiple access routes and sightlines break linear flow, making exploration feel organic and open-ended. The showroom and office zones are located at opposite ends of the second floor—private yet still porous, maintaining flexibility within the overall flow.

Mountain Soil emphasizes that NO SUCH THING is not about glorifying objects, but about creating a field for embodied encounters—where people can explore the relationship between lifestyle and choice through movement, perception, and introspection. It is a pocket of openness in the city—a porous interface and an ongoing, undefined experiment in everyday living. As its name suggests, NO SUCH THING doesn’t offer answers. Instead, it invites a reimagining of space, objects, and the lives lived among them.
