BIG + Arts Group

Located on the shores of Jinji Lake, this station is a key node in Suzhou's lakeside promenade project. Designed by BIG and Arts Group, it seamlessly blends traditional Chinese courtyard architecture with contemporary public space, drawing inspiration from the cultural tradition of gathering beneath trees. Four interconnected structures create an open environment, offering residents and visitors a place to meet and rest, while complementing the soon-to-be-completed Suzhou Contemporary Art Museum.

Nestled under camphor trees, the roof extends like a tree canopy, its flowing form providing shelter at the pathway intersections. Perforated panels cast dappled shadows reminiscent of rustling leaves, balancing poetic beauty with thermal performance. The façade features glass bricks in place of traditional glazed tiles, softening the boundaries between indoors and outdoors. Visitors can enjoy lake views through the transparent structure, while polished steel surfaces reflect greenery, harmonizing the station with the surrounding waterfront park.

Gently lifting eaves guide visitors into a tranquil courtyard centered around a grand tree, where a café, boutique, restaurant, and visitor center offer a variety of experiences. The dual-layered roof mimics the effect of a tree canopy, allowing sunlight to filter through perforations, creating an ever-changing interplay of light and shadow. This project reinterprets the relationship between the lake and the city with a contemporary architectural language, fusing traditional spirit with modern design to create a vibrant public space.
