In 1986, the discovery of illegally added methanol in over 300 Italian wine brands shattered trust in the industry, leading many vineyards to be abandoned and left to regenerate naturally. Within this recovering landscape, The Missing Room proposes a renewed relationship between humans and nature. Free of walls and ceiling, it exists beyond the conventional house, positioning nature as the primary inhabitant and humans as temporary guests. Activated by water and fire, the project reimagines primal rituals—resting, cooking, bathing, and gathering— as shared, open-air experiences beneath tree canopies and sky, inviting a slower pace and a redefinition of domestic life.

As visitors move through the landscape, The Missing Room reveals itself through fleeting glimpses of small secondary structures embedded in the forest, preparing the approach to the central encounter. At its core rises a seven-meter-tall monolithic chimney. Fire fuels the ovens on one side and heats water for bathing on the other, while also warming the space. Reaching the height of the surrounding trees, the chimney becomes a beacon above the canopy, its smoke guiding visitors through the landscape. Concealed doors integrate two ovens into the chimney's extraction system, allowing the worktop to transform into a large frying surface. Together with the water elements, these features form the heart of the room. Water, like fire, activates the structure. Released at the entrance, it flows through a main channel that distributes water to basins throughout the space. Users direct the flow by adding or removing plugs—to fill the bath, use the sink, or supply the cattle trough. The bath beside the channel accommodates three to four people and is heated through natural convection; for solo use, a partition reduces its volume to conserve water. When closed, the bath becomes a heated surface for resting or sleeping. A removable sail canopy provides shade and rain protection, casting dappled shadows by day and reflecting recessed lighting at night to transform the structure into a glowing lantern.

To protect the land, the modular structure rests on a non-invasive screw-pile foundation, ensuring no permanent traces are left if removal becomes necessary. Wastewater from bathing and cooking is filtered and dispersed into the field, creating irrigated and wet areas that support biodiversity. Constructed from stainless steel, the refuge is durable, recyclable, and resistant to weathering.
