LASSA

KHI is located in a gently sloping olive grove in the southern Peloponnese. The project is formed by a single continuous rippling wall that frames a series of protected courtyards at the extremity of each wing. The X-shaped massing divides the site into four distinct areas providing the eastern gardens with visual intimacy and variable shading throughout the day. The wall surface is animated by cast concrete ripples whose amplitude diminishes along the length of the facade. The course of the sun creates a play of shadows throughout the day. The rippling wall acts as a backdrop for tree shadows. The height of the project is constrained to the peak of the surrounding olive trees, whilst maintaining panoramic views to the sea from an accessible roof terrace. In its deployment, the wall elevation varies as it is gradually sunken into the terrain, tapering the height of the facade to 1.2m at the end of each wing. The excavated earth was recuperated to create a tapered transition enabling a softer integration of the project within the agrarian landscape. The west wing contains the public areas as well as a large opening towards the sea and the south terrace. Internally, each room is extended by a terrace and courtyard. The room wall projects outward and folds to frame a lemon tree. The absence of corners and the continuity of the wall provide spatial expansion. The curved walls frame the changing sky color and light, inducing a strong presence of the sky within the interior.

LASSA
LASSA was co-founded by Theo Sarantoglou Lalis and Dora Sweijd in 2009 with offices in London, Brussels and Greece. LASSA ‘s work operates at the intersection between the fields of Architecture, Landscape and Art.

LASSA’s research is focussing on two main considerations: on the one hand the development of architectural form for its capacity to stimulate the body and enhance social life. And on the other hand, rethinking the politics of design and construction and the development of new constructive strategies and workflows.

Current work includes commissions from the public and private sectors in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. With experience working in 18 countries, our team has extensive experience in the delivery of international projects of great sophistication with a particular control over the manufacturing process and cost.

LASSA is concurrently engaged in academic research through the work of Diploma 17 (March), at the Architectural Association and through workshops and lectures worldwide. Besides teaching at the AA, our team has held teaching positions at Universities such as Harvard, Columbia, the Bartlett, Lund University and Chalmers.

LASSA has won a number of international awards for Villa Ypsilon and the KHI House such as Idea-tops (Shenzhen), Big See Award (Slovenia), Design Educates (Japan) Design boom and others. LASSA was a finalist for several international awards, including the Chernikov award and the Lisbon Biennale award. LASSA’s work has been featured in a number of media including a TED Brussels, a Smithsonian TV documentary on Greece (Aerial Greece) and a number of television and radio shows internationally.
