The massive concrete, shaped like rock and marked by wear, emerges from the mountain, preserving traces of the past. Inside, a path reveals vividly colored mechanical elements — pulleys, cables, gears — like kinetic archaeological artifacts, now still. The experience becomes an educational ascent, ending with a panoramic Dolomite view.

The Reinhold Messner Haus — at 2,000 meters above sea level, designed by Plasma Studio from a repurposed cable car station between Sesto and Monte Elmo — evokes a suspended sense of time. It serves as an educational space reflecting the values of exploration: risk, slowness, silence, sustainability, tourism, and mountaineering. Built to endure harsh conditions, the structure is now reshaped to integrate with the topography, promoting conscious, low-impact alpine tourism.

The old station was stripped of additions to create a large roof-turned-artificial landscape. Visitors enter through a concrete opening, descending into the foyer and through a 17-meter-high counterweight shaft, now a vertical circulation space. After exploring the raw original construction, they ascend to a luminous room that unveils the Dolomites. Beneath the former cabin platform, a debris-formed surface leads to a projecting viewpoint. The path ends in the main hall with a sloped façade echoing the station's original steel frame, offering a 180-degree mountain view. The route continues through old workshops and storerooms to a small cinema room, returning to the foyer through integrated technical spaces.

A new glazed façade and trapezoidal roof opening preserve the building's infrastructure character, transforming it into a viewing device. A lower-level panoramic platform deepens the connection between architecture and landscape, supporting a narrative where Reinhold Messner's legacy engages with the Dolomites. Commissioned by 3 Zinnen Spa, the project reflects Messner's vision of balance between people and nature, memory and transformation. Upcycling extends the site's life: bricks and concrete reshape the terrain, original metal becomes a soffit. Infrastructure is not erased but woven into the exhibition's story.
