The design focuses its capacity on offering the neighborhood a library. Rather than creating a memorial just about one great person, our project carouses the warmth and compassion that connected so many others to him, including a deep concern with the community where he lived for so many years. Instead of demolishing the tapestry of extant structures along the rolling hillside, we frame the various existing structures on the site with the new architecture, bringing them a renewed sense of life and a revitalized understanding through intentional interplay with the new structure.

Once inside, the procession of the building is such: a visitor entering the site walks a loop which ties all the seemingly scattered elements — the trees, the existing home, et cetera — into one uninterrupted experience. Along the continuous walk, the visitor gradually happens upon these moments throughout the site. One comes across such features as the enormous trees, including the Grandpa Tree, or being presented with carefully choreographed views of the sky. At the memorial, unforeseen interstitial pockets emerge from between the existing structures and the pathways that encircle them. These are neither strictly new nor old but rather present us with re-enlivened spaces where the two temporal states can converse. Curated views of nature focus less on showcasing it a point blank range as is often the case but, alternatively, on providing ways to feel nature indirectly.

BCHO Architects is about twenty to thirty people firm. Founded in Seoul, Korea in 1994, the firm started as a design-build office with a focus on simple structures and strong regard for nature. The design team has been working very closely with contractors and multiple fabrication specialists in various disciplines; including stone masons, product designers, wood workers, potters, and engineers. The firm also has multiple professional collaborators throughout the world in North and South America. BCHO Architects believe that buildings, furniture and art are made, not created. Each architectural project, encompassing various scales and programs, explores the phenomenon of light and space, fabrication and construction methods, recycling and reusing, and a broad sense of sustainability (social/cultural/physical) which uses collective creative energy to reduce the demand for grid energy.
