大角咀是香港城市發展速度最快、人口最密集的社區之一。設計團隊旨在喚起昔日「海與陸之間」的共同記憶,並引發對未來城市的反思。以當地傳統白鐵工藝和復合竹新材料結合,為正快速轉型的社區打造一處公共聚落空間。

 

Located in Tai Kok Tsui — one of the Hong Kong's most densely populated and rapidly transforming neighborhoods — the Urban Living Lab blends local galvanized steel craftsmanship with glulam bamboo to create a communal space that reflects the district's evolving identity. The fluid vessel-like form evokes ocean waves, reawakening collective memories of Tai Kok Tsui's relationship between sea and land while sparking new visions for its urban future.

設計初期團隊多方蒐集當地社區意見,居民普遍期盼在此空地增設遮蔭設施,為市中心注入新的公共活力。最終,以環境為本的「城市生活所」由此而生,成為一處日常休憩、社區聚會與教育活動的核心據點。設計靈感汲取自當地曾為船塢與避風塘的歷史背景,以當地傳統白鐵技藝結合現代技術,打造象徵「海與陸」交融的竹與鋼混合結構。

 

Conceived as a public parasol, the pavilion provides shelter from the subtropical climate and invites residents to gather in the open space north of Olympian City II. Its geometry wraps around existing palm trees, maximizing shade and airflow. Designed as an urban platform to reclaim underused space, it frames its surroundings to form a site-specific collective place within the changing neighborhood. The overall form responds to site conditions shielding strong summer sunlight while welcoming reflected winter light. The glulam bamboo and galvanized steel shell enables efficient rainwater drainage and, thanks to bamboo's low heat capacity, offers a naturally comfortable, well-ventilated space in harmony with the site's palm trees and subtropical climate.

同時,團隊亦與具深厚竹材加工經驗的製造商合作,利用作結構用途的膠合竹材,實現香港首個膠合竹結構建築。外觀設計亦充分回應基地條件:在夏季遮擋強烈西南日照,冬季則引入柔和反射光。結合白鐵與復合竹的殼體結構,不僅能引導雨水至周圍透水磚廣場,也藉竹材低比熱容的特性維持舒適氣候。亭體的律動造型與原有棕櫚樹形成自然通風的半戶外空間,提供居民一處能避開濕熱氣候、共享庇蔭與交流的場所。

 

 

Drawing from the area's history as a shipyard and typhoon shelter, the project revives traditional steel craftmanship by merging it with modern fabrication and bamboo construction. This hybrid method preserves the site's material heritage while pioneering Hong Kong's first glulam bamboo structure achieving a 75% reduction in embodied carbon compared to steel, or about 7 tons of CO₂ emission saved. Moreover, community engagement shaped every stage of design through meetings, exhibitions, and workshops. Local feedback emphasized the need for shaded, welcoming public space. Beyond a resting area, the Urban Living Lab functions as a hub for social and educational activities within the community's renewal.

 

 

 

此外,量體兼具重複使用與可移動特性,五個模組能拆解、遷移並重新組裝至其他地點。本案藉由結合在地竹材與傳統白鐵工藝,建立一套以生物基材料為主,實現負碳排與循環再生的建築體系,有效減少近乎七公噸碳排量,為傳統建材注入新的永續價值與設計思維。

Designed for relocation and reuse, the pavilion's five modular units will, after twelve months, be dismantled and reassembled across new sites facing similar urban challenges. The long-term vision is to establish a bio-based, carbon-negative circular construction system — integrating locally sourced bamboo and traditional steel craftmanship to redefine sustainable building practices.
