The project consists of an architectural rear extension to an old country family home in Italy where all the interior and outdoor spaces have been redesigned. Going through a challenging era, this project is designed to transform and adapt to ever-changing needs. The ability to adapt and transform is at the core of this home, where multifunctional spaces respond to ever-changing needs. Our relationship with the home is changing and this project wants to respond to these changes. Communication is exchanged in a split second, television is no longer the focus of the living room, the kitchen is a place not just to eat but also to work and socialize.
The main space, at ground floor, is a mixture of functions where cooking play central stage. the kitchen becomes not only a place where you eat but also a place where you work, socialize and study. A 3 meter long timber table cantilevered from the kitchen island appears to float and becomes integral part of the cooking area. A 14 meter long double height oak timber wall (from certified forest ) incorporates different functions: staircase balustrade as well as mezzanine balustrade -display unit – hidden storage- hidden pivoting door - hidden kitchen area to serve as a support to the main kitchen island. Indoor and outdoor pivoting panels as well as indoor sliding screens allow space reconfiguration and trigger different ways of inhabiting spaces. Natural materials such as timber and porfido stone rough cut or split cut , travertine and orsera stones + metal are the few materials utilized in this project. All materials are treated in different way to bring out its inner beauty.

The studio was founded in 2014 by Alessandro Isola. Alessandro’s formal training began at home in Italy, where he studied Art and Interior Architecture in Milan. He then headed to England and graduated in Architecture at the Oxford Brookes University School of Architecture, where he was granted a distinction and awarded the coveted Michael King memorial prize. He then concluded his studies at the prestigious Architectural Association in London and worked for Foster + Partners where he also gained his RIBA/ARB professional chartered qualification. He then co-founded IM Lab and subsequently started his practice in 2014.
With his creatively like-minded team, he works internationally with current projects in England, United States, Switzerland, Russia and Italy. His projects and products have been exhibited, published, and awarded internationally.
For much of his production, Alessandro returns to his native Italy to source true independent craftsmen, who over generations have perfected a particular craft technique. This bygone artisan know-how and timeless quality is sensitively paired with latter-day advancements in technology, to turn ideas into reality.
