The Industrial Building in Viana do Castelo, located in the Lanheses area of Portugal, redefines the traditional industrial facility by harmonizing functionality with architectural elegance. The project consists of two distinct volumes with varying heights, carefully balancing form and purpose. The first volume houses a large industrial, warehousing, and technical area, complete with a canopy that shelters the shipping zone. The second volume serves as the social and administrative block, comprising two above-ground floors that define the building’s main elevation and act as its visual centerpiece.

The design focuses on the social and administrative block, employing a coherent architectural language to create a sense of unity. The main elevation is clad in prefabricated concrete panels featuring vertical slats arranged in a repetitive rhythm. This modular system not only meets the diverse functional demands of the project but also imbues the facade with a calm and ordered aesthetic. To break the monotony of the expansive main elevation, outdoor patios are strategically introduced, “excavating” portions of the structure. This interplay of solids and voids deconstructs the volume while enhancing spatial flexibility. The resulting “full and empty” dynamic invites natural light to penetrate the interiors, creating a rich interplay of light and shadow throughout the day.

The building’s main entrance is marked by a striking foyer with double-height ceilings, offering an immediate sense of scale and openness. At its heart lies a suspended staircase that serves as both a functional and sculptural element. Detached from the walls and slabs, the staircase is supported by an independent concrete block that forms its initial steps. This deliberate separation introduces a subtle tension, creating a visual and structural interplay that anchors the space with elegance.

The project’s two volumes—industrial and administrative—maintain an apparent autonomy while forming a cohesive whole. The industrial section emphasizes practicality with its streamlined design and sheltered shipping zone, contrasting with the textured facade of the administrative block. Together, they create a balanced composition, with the administrative block acting as the project’s public face, inviting users into a space that transcends mere utility.
