Nestled in Hungary's UNESCO-listed Tokaj-Hegyalja wine region, the Sauska Tokaj winery harmonizes effortlessly with its surroundings. Its elegant form appears to float above the vineyards, complementing the landscape while making a striking architectural statement. Beyond aesthetics, the winery enhances the region's reputation for tourism and fine winemaking. The design brief called for a distinctive facility focused on fresh wines, while integrating hospitality and gastronomy. Positioned on an elevated site among the area's key settlements, the project sought a structure that feels almost detached from the ground. Architect Péter Bordás described the concept as ''untouched untouchable'' — a building that hovers gently above the rolling vineyards.

The winery consists of two intersecting, 36-meter-wide lens-shaped volumes. These visible, elevated structures are freely accessible to visitors, while functional areas requiring stable temperatures—such as fermentation and storage — are housed underground. In the dramatic, circular fermentation halls, stainless steel tanks encircle a central wooden barrel aging area. Above, the restaurant and bar occupy the floating lens structures, supported by slender steel columns. The illusion of levitation is enhanced as sunlight glides across the underside of the hovering forms.

The entrance integrates seamlessly with the sloping terrain, allowing the sculptural form to make an unbroken impact. A pathway from the parking area frames sweeping vineyard views, guiding guests through a transition space into the lobby. From here, a skylit corridor leads to the main visitor areas and panoramic terrace. Inside, the high, curved ceilings of the restaurant and bar narrow toward the view, directing the eye outward.
Designed by Tihany Design, the interiors reflect the winemaking heritage; wood, limestone, and steel accents create a refined, welcoming atmosphere that echoes the vineyard's timeless elegance. Operational zones for pressing, bottling, and labeling are arranged in a rectangular layout linked to the fermentation halls, with grapes arriving and wines departing through a tunnel along the building's axis. Below, the cellar's metallic aesthetic contrasts with the warm, vibrant visitor spaces above.Stepping onto the terrace, guests encounter the vastness of the landscape, concluding a powerful sensory journey.
