Located in a residential neighborhood of Loja, a city nestled in the lower Andes of southern Ecuador at an altitude of 2,060 meters, this house explores the intersection of structural principles and spatial flexibility. Built on a compact 7.60 m × 13.50 m plot, the project redefines architectural space by balancing structural clarity with adaptable living solutions.

Constructed with exposed reinforced concrete, the house’s structural system is both its defining aesthetic and organizational principle. The design minimizes load-bearing elements, achieving an elegant structural solution with two lateral shear walls and two intermediate diaphragms. This configuration ensures a sense of openness and fluidity across all floors. The main volume, measuring five meters in width, extends three meters outward in a striking cantilever over the street, creating a sheltered open patio on the ground floor. This space functions as a flexible recreational area for children while also serving the home’s productive activities.
Designed as a four-level spatial container, the house accommodates diverse functions and evolving needs. The ground floor and basement serve as independent workspaces with direct street access, enabling entrepreneurial or productive activities without disrupting domestic life. The upper floors, designated for residential use, are conceived for future adaptability—potentially transforming into additional work areas or separate living units. This adaptability ensures long-term functionality, allowing the home to evolve with its inhabitants over time.

More than a residence, this house is a thoughtful response to contemporary living demands while maintaining a deep connection with its natural surroundings. The design frames views of the Andes with a low parapet from the upper floors, while an inverted parapet suspended from the ceiling visually links the interior to a tree in the ground-floor patio. These elements not only enhance the spatial experience but also maximize natural light, particularly from the morning sun, seamlessly integrating the home into its environment.
