Surrounded by orange trees that in springtime give off their pleasant and aromatic scent of orange blossom and on the banks of the Turia River, this house in Valencia sits under a poetic title that, when unraveled, takes on a complete architectural sense. A light and elegant plan is presented in this house as the minimum expression of shelter, where diaphanousness is achieved by eliminating the limits of the interior space and reconfiguring by the projection of its own shadow. Its name, "The mass and the ether" is clearly represented by a stone volume that harmoniously supports an imposing cantilever that generates, through its corporeality, an architecture that guarantees intimacy, while allowing one to enjoy the beauty of the exterior spaces.
The singularity provided by the slight overhang of the plane under whose shade the program of the day area is developed, is undoubtedly one of the visual attractions of this house. The different geometries and volumes that accommodate the day and night areas are adapted to the irregular shape of the terrain, which links the project to the site. On the north side of the plot, the night area is projected as a large mass body whose materiality is presented through warm masonry walls. The program of the house is established with a clear division between night and day rooms that coexist independently in order to achieve an optimal functioning of its uses. A subtraction of land allows the creation of a backyard for the lower floor that not only offers nature and beautiful views, but also generates different levels that incorporate vegetation and ensure spaciousness and luminosity to the rooms of the basement, thus connecting the house with all existing areas. The day area is developed under the horizontality and lightness of the overhanging plane whose shade is completed with large glass windows that welcome with their diaphanousness rooms such as the kitchen and the living.
The house cannot be developed without considering the natural elements and materials with which the project has been conceived and shaped. Therefore, the natural light, the reflections provided by the water of the pool, the choice of vegetation, the furniture, or the materials used are key to the final result of the house. The brightness of this home highlights its cozy interiors dressed in hardwoods such as walnut, which, through its warm tone and representative veins, elegantly decorate the spaces in which it is located. Neutral colors and natural textiles blend with contemporary furnishings that are integrated into each room, providing a carefully designed and embellishing interior design.
