Nujiang Grand Canyon Bookstore of Librairie Avant-Garde, Yunnan, China

The Nujiang Grand Canyon Bookstore of Librairie Avant-Garde rests atop the Gaoligong Mountains, overlooking the sacred peaks of the Lisu and Bai ethnic groups. Located at Yangpo Village, an ancient Lisu settlement in Lushui, the site merges cultural heritage with dramatic natural landscapes. Inspired by the village's traditional tools, particularly crossbows and arrows, the design reflects the interplay between local identity and contemporary architecture, which became a cultural totem and a key inspiration for the project.

Balancing individuality with local context is a core consideration in the design. The Lisu village along the Gaoligong Mountain ridge reflects strong natural and cultural identities, which the architecture embraces.

Using a contemporary language, the architects reinterpret the village's sloped-roof typology, creating a dialogue that bridges the past and present. The slanted structure connects with the mountainous environment, while its inclined geometry and steep gradient harmonize with the natural topography, evoking the momentum of "an arrow on the bowstring." The building's exterior features openings in varied shapes and orientations, resonating with its dynamic form. These openings frame unique canyon views, transforming the bookstore into a medium that links people with the sky, land, and cultural heritage.

The building spans three levels, connected by two distinct circulation routes that offer a dynamic spatial journey. Internal circulation begins at the top-level café, where a sloping roof opens toward the sky, fostering a spiritual atmosphere. Descending to the mid-level bookstore, visitors find shelter within concrete walls that enclose three sides. The lower-level theatre, illuminated by shimmering skylights beneath water, features two 6-meter-tall camphor-wood doors that open daily in a ritual. Inside, the theatre becomes a space for reading and reflection, while outside, the Nujiang's roar contrasts with the land's tranquility. The canyon serves as a dramatic natural stage where literature and nature converge. External circulation begins at a narrow, elevated entry defined by opposing forms, reminiscent of the canyon carved by the Nujiang River. Progressing along the central axis, visitors transition from the confined artificial space to the expansive natural canyon, unveiling a profound sense of openness.
