Baum lab

Synapse House, an experimental housing project, reimagines domestic life by fostering open interactions within a star-shaped layout. The unique floor plan organizes daily functions around two skylighted halls, creating a bright, interconnected core. Inspired by the workings of a neural network, architectural “branches” radiate from the nucleus to the exterior, forging intimate connections between interior spaces and the surrounding garden, much like architectural synapses. Two timber-built L-shaped volumes house functional spaces such as bathrooms, closets, and the kitchen, skillfully framing the flow of domestic life around the central halls.

Constructed with a double-shell insulated concrete system, the building is as innovative in materials as it is in design. This highly efficient structure weighs less than half of what one might expect while delivering triple the thermal insulation. Sustainability is at the heart of the project, meeting the challenge of designing a four-room home for a family of five with minimal carbon footprint.

The layout introduces a fresh housing typology in its residential area, softening the boundaries between indoor and outdoor, public and private spaces. The house is a seamless sequence of spaces that gently transition between levels of privacy. A promenade through a dry garden leads residents to an open, roofed entrance porch that serves as a threshold, connecting the front garden to the private backyard with a swimming pool.

Once inside, two skylighted halls serve as the nucleus of activity. Social spaces such as the kitchen, living, and dining areas radiate from the main hall in a V-shape, offering divergent views of the garden. Meanwhile, private areas—two bedrooms, including one en suite, and a future-expandable space—extend from the secondary hall.

Designed as a prototype, Synapse House is a sustainable model for future living. Its semi-prefabricated construction system uses a mere three materials: concrete, wood, and glass. The insulated shell, made with BauPanelTM, combines a galvanized steel mesh, concrete layers, and a central insulation core to form a 20-centimeter-thick structural envelope that provides superior thermal and acoustic insulation. Radiant heating and cooling systems embedded in polished concrete floors further enhance energy efficiency.

Passive strategies, including continuous insulation, sun-shaded south-facing windows, cross ventilation, and indirect natural lighting, ensure year-round comfort, while active systems like photovoltaic panels, heat pumps, and LED lighting make it a zero-carbon home. Synapse House exemplifies a new paradigm in construction, embracing sustainable innovation and reimagining the relationship between architecture, nature, and human living.
