Superhelix Pracownia Projektowa – Bartłomiej Drabik

Nestled near the southern border of Kraków, this residence is set amidst undulating terrain, offering a foretaste of the majestic Beskid Wyspowy and the towering Tatra Mountains. The house stands on a gently sloping plot, and its tripartite layout emerges as a direct response to the site's conditions, local regulations, functional needs, and the residents' expectations.

Given the existing and potential neighboring buildings, the cardinal directions, and key view openings, the ideal approach was to position the house along the northern edge of the plot, parallel to its boundary. This arrangement would preserve the best portion of the site as open outdoor space. However, local zoning regulations required the building's ridge to align parallel to the adjacent road. Complicating matters further, the irregularly shaped plot meant that its northern boundary did not align with the road. To reconcile these constraints while making the best use of the available land, the design team split the elongated volume into three distinct sections, staggering them to comply with regulations while preserving the site's prime outdoor area.

Each of the three volumes corresponds to a distinct function. The section closest to the road houses the garage and utility rooms. The central volume contains the living, dining, and kitchen areas, which seamlessly connect to the terrace and garden through expansive glazing. The third and final section is dedicated to the most private spaces, including the bedrooms and bathrooms. The thoughtful placement of the house within the site ensures privacy for its residents, further enhanced by a carport at the entrance. With its pitched roof, the carport rises where shelter is needed while lowering where an open view is preferred, blending smoothly into the surrounding terrain.

At the heart of the home, the main living area—comprising the kitchen, dining, and lounge—features three-meter-high, corner-glazed, mullion-free windows that create an uninterrupted transition to the outdoors. During the warmer months, the boundary between inside and outside dissolves, visually expanding the living space. A deep roof overhang, extending more than four meters, shelters the terrace from the sun, rain, and snow. The terrace is further protected from strong winds by the garage on the west and the carport on the south, creating a comfortable outdoor environment.

The building employs traditional regional construction techniques, utilizing brick and reinforced concrete with a timber roof truss. For the façade, titanium-zinc cladding and western red cedar were chosen—both materials that age gracefully, developing a protective patina over time without requiring special maintenance. The underside of the eaves and sections of the gable walls are clad in polished stainless steel, subtly reflecting light in the evening to softly illuminate the terrace. This careful interplay of materials and light enhances the home's atmosphere, offering a tranquil and poetic living experience.
